Stefano Giuliani
Consultant Neonatal, Paediatric and Adolescent Surgeon

FRCS (Eng), MD (Ita), MD (USA), PhD

Mr Giuliani is a consultant Specialist Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London.

Clincial Training

Mr Giuliani graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Udine (Italy) in 2000 and earned his Italian Medical Licence in 2001. In December 2006 he became a certified paediatric surgeon after a five-year programme at the University of Padova (Italy)

He also obtained the United States Medical Licence (USMLE) and he worked for 4 years at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, USA. In particular, from 2007 to 2009, Mr Giuliani was selected for a highly competitive clinical international fellowship in paediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. This is one of the best paediatric hospitals in America and the largest on the West Coast. This was an excellent clinical experience for him and he was able to develop outstanding surgical skills in the most challenging subspecialties of paediatric surgery such as neonatal surgery, surgical oncology, paediatric minimally invasive surgery, paediatric trauma, and kidney transplantation.

Mr Giuliani has been living and working in London since 2010. He is focusing on advancing the field of paediatric surgery whilst improving the quality of treatment for his young patients.

The international background makes Mr Giuliani an experienced paediatric surgeon aware of the latest and most advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques (laparoscopy and thoracoscopy) in the field.

Specialist Expertise

Mr Giuliani is also a specialised paediatric surgeon which means he has special skills in the most complex cases of paediatric surgery. In addition, whenever possible, he is offering minimal invasive surgical techniques (keyhole surgery) to reduce scar size, postoperative pain and reduce the length of stay in his young patients.

His main interests and sub specialties are:

General paediatric surgery (inguinal hernia, undescended testis, circumcision, umbilical hernia, etc.)

Upper and lower gastro-intestinal paediatric surgery (gastro-oesophageal reflux surgery, severe constipation, recurrent abdominal pain, anorectal anomalies, Hirschsprung’s disease etc.)

Paediatric surgical oncology (neck, chest and abdominal masses, soft tissue and muscle lesions, etc.)

Congenital vascular anomalies (infantile haemangioma, venous and lymphatic malformations, etc.)

Prenatal surgical counselling (fetal cysts, congenital anomalies, etc.)

Academic Training

Mr Giuliani started being truly passionate about research at the end of his medical school. He was a Research Fellow from 2005 to 2007 at the Saban Research Institute, University of Southern California, USA . He undertook a high quality research training (leading to a PhD) in Developmental Medicine and Stem Cells under the mentorship of Prof Roger De Filippo and Prof Laura Perin at the Laboratory for Organ Regenerative Research and Cell Therapeutics in Urology, Saban Research Insitute. He graduated with a PhD thesis on the role of amniotic fluid stem cells in the regeneration of renal tissue in vitro and in vivo.

At present Mr Giuliani is a passionate and enthusiastic senior lecturer at UCL in London. His team is developing important research projects in the field of neonatal surgery, paediatric oncology and clinical outcomes.

Mr Giuliani has attended multiple courses and seminars to enhance his knowledge in research and education.

Few years ago he graduated from the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training (GCSRT) Program which is a distant learning master in research and epidemiology at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
